Chapter 10

Bryan

When Mad stopped making the gagging noises over my ice cream, I knew something was wrong. Looking up from heaven on earth, I saw their cloudy expressions and understood there was a problem. I didn’t want to know, but I turned to follow their gaze, anyway.

Shit.

I guess it was too much to ask to have a few days at home without running into anyone difficult. Even with everyone in different colleges, it was Thanksgiving week and I should have realized we’d see people around town. But did that have to include Zach and Matt?

They glanced around the shop and zeroed in on us faster than I would have expected. They’d seen us walk in. It was the only reason they would have known to look for us. As they walked over to our table, I heard Mad whisper to Jeremy and Kevin.

“Don’t say anything you don’t want all over town. No hints about anything different or they’ll latch on to it.”

“Got it.” Jeremy gave a curt nod then looked over to Kevin. “No teasing.”

Kevin snorted and tried to look sweet but he wasn’t trying that hard because it wasn’t believable at all. “Who, me?”

We were all laughing when Zach and Matt reached the table. Matt smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes, or at least that was the way it felt to me. “Hey. We weren’t sure you guys were going to be back this week.”

“Hi.” Mad took control. He was friendly, but it wasn’t welcoming. He clearly wasn’t inviting them to join us, but the guys didn’t seem to take the hint. “Yeah, we’re just visiting for a few days.”

“Hey, I’m Zach.” He grinned and waved to Jeremy and Kevin. “That’s Matt. We’re friends of Bryan’s from high school.”

“Nice to meet you.” Jeremy’s tone was formal and cool. Kevin just lifted a hand in greeting but kept silent. It was probably for the best. His sense of humor would get us all in trouble.

“You guys friends from school? I don’t recognize you from around here.” Matt looked at everyone expectantly.

“Yes.” Jeremy kept his answer frustratingly short. Part of me wanted to laugh, but I managed to keep it under control—barely.

Matt and Zach did laugh. They seemed to find the stressful encounter humorous. I couldn’t understand why. Something about the way they kept pushing made me want to pull back even more. The fact that I’d managed to share a little with Jeremy and Kevin made me more confident that it wasn’t me being nervous about sharing.

There was just something off about those two.

I had to keep reminding myself I didn’t have to share if I didn’t want to. And with them, I didn’t want to. Sitting a little straighter, I gave them a tight smile. “We have to get going, but it was good seeing you.”

Standing up, sad that I wasn’t going to be able to finish my dessert, I nodded to them and started cleaning up the table. Kevin grabbed the rest of the trash and within seconds, we were ready to go.
